Acoustics

University of Maine
Minsky Recording Facility

John Dyer is a co-developer of the University of Maine's New Media program.  This work included designing and constructing the recording studio located above the Minsky Recital Hall.  John transformed the old lighting area of the back of the hall into a recording control room by using custom-designed acoustic panels surrounded by birch trim to match the construction of the hall itself.  Cabling from the studio area to the stage of the hall, in effect, converted the recital hall to a 2400 square foot live room.

The Waypoint
Maine Maritime Academy

In 2010, John transformed the Waypoint snack bar and student lounge into a concert hall. This extensive project involved installing 14 hinged 4' x 4' panels to walls flanking the stage area so that when the space is not in use as a venue, the panels are retracted to provide casual sitting space for students.

These panels, custom velour curtains made by hand at Unintentional, and other static texturized panels and surface treatments, transformed this challenging space into a viable and acoustically pleasant entertainment venue.

The Stroud Artist Complex
Brooklin, Maine

This Stroud Complex is a 12-room artist workshop.  Each room was hardwired at construction with two Acoustic Research monitors and a subwoofer. Volume and on-off controls were placed at the entrance of each space. A centrally located amp room was constructed and wired so that its contents can be controlled from anywhere in the building by an array of radio frequency transmitters.  A processor chain was designed and deployed to enhance older recordings as per Ms. Stroud's personal taste.

In the artist's library upstairs, a state-of-the-art home theater was constructed with pre-programmed multiple speaker positions, adjusted by remote control depending on the number of individuals in the "audience" and their positions in the space.
